Answer: Regarding your query on the procedure of applying for Aadhaar card while you are in India, kindly note that
Aadhaar application procedure is the same for everyone regardless of citizenship. Physical presence of the applicant in
India is required to enable recording of biometric data.
Before you apply for Aadhaar cards with your family in India, kindly be aware that if you are residing in China, as stated in
your email, then you may not be eligible for Aadhaar cards. Read on . . .
Information all NRIs should be aware of regarding Aadhaar Card
As of today [September 13, 2017] only those who are resident in India are eligible for Aadhaar. Regardless of whether an
individual is an NRI, OCI, PIO or foreigner; if they are RESIDENT in India they are eligible for Aadhaar. Likewise, NRI, OCI,
PIO or foreigners who are NOT resident in India are not eligible for Aadhaar cards. Kindly note that simply visiting India as
a tourist does not make the person a resident.
Residency confirmation for Aadhaar
Aadhaar card application requires the applicant to confirm that they have been residing in India for at least 182 days
in the preceding 12 months.
Any NRI planning to apply for Aadhaar is cautioned to read the Aadhaar card application form before signing and
submitting application.
What NRIs can do if their bank wants them to provide Aadhaar Card?
If you are an NRI, then you don’t reside in India and hence not eligible for Aadhaar. Notify your bank that as a non-resident
you are not eligible for Aadhaar. You cannot provide them with Aadhaar as you cannot legally get one.
Why are banks asking NRIs to submit Aadhaar Numbers?
Some of the reasons that come to mind:
•
Bank is not aware of an account holders NRI status
•
Perhaps bank is not aware that Aadhaar is only for residents of India
•
Another reason could be that some NRIs continue to hold domestic bank accounts in India despite their NRI status.
NRIs cannot hold domestic bank accounts and are allowed to hold non-resident bank accounts only.
When will NRI, OCI & PIO be allowed to get Aadhaar Card?
Last year there was an announcement from India’s external affairs minister [January 9, 2016] that the government was
considering giving Aadhaar cards to NRIs and OCI card holders. However, so far this has not been finalized.
Now in September 2017, there are still reports in the India media that, The Unique Identification Authority of India [UIDAI]
is working on a policy for the Aadhaar enrollment of NRIs, Overseas Citizens of India [OCI] and Persons of Indian Origin
[PIO]. No official announcement has been make when this will happen.
