Q.1157 Options for H-1B visa holder in USA if visa not extended . . .
Question: My husband works in software industry as technician and we have been in USA for almost four years. We have
plan to go back to India as job visa in future is shaky and can end anytime.
I hear India IT sector is booming my question is what are job prospects in IT sector because we want to plan our return
properly and have good job in India. Your input will help.
May God bless you and thank you.
Answer: You are correct in wanting to plan ahead before your intended move back to India. Your husband should not
wait to arrive in India and start looking for a job in India. Being in the IT field he should be well versed in exploring job
opportunities in India using the Internet. Start contacting prospective employers in India from USA to see what offers are
available.
Many professionals from India working in USA may already be in the process of evaluating the prospects of perhaps
returning to their home countries in the near future following the recent announcements stating that the US government
is considering plans to end the H-4 visas which are issued to immediate family members such as spouse/children under 21
years of age of the H-1B visa holders. Ending H-4 visa would take away the right of H1-B spouses to work in USA and this
would definitely effect the economic planning and stability of thousands of H-1B workers whose spouses or family
members may already be working in USA.
Job prospects in India for returning NRIs
I don’t want to discourage you but the reality is that good IT jobs in India are not easy to come by these days. As more and
more companies faced with competition and depleting market share lean towards cost cutting, employment prospects in
India are not very bright unless a person has specific skills. You should also consider the option of perhaps moving to
Canada. Many H-1B visa holders are already probing the option of moving out of the United States and settle in Canada as
Canadian immigration laws for professionals may not be very strict.
