Over half of India’s workforce is self employed!
A study conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) of the ministry of statistics and programme implementation found that over half
of India's workforce (51%) is self employed! compare this to USA where only 6.6 percent are reportedly self-employed.
While there are many successful businesses in India, a number of self employed Indians are small business people who make their living running
various businesses on the streets of India. They provide goods and services to the millions of poor and middle class families.
If you are touring India, even the street hawker selling pencils or balloons etc. is a person who is in fact self employed.
Many faces of India’s 51% self-employed businessmen
The large number of self employed in India provide goods and services in India in their own unique way. Next time as you walk down the street
and see hawkers selling their wares on the pavement and street corners, think businessmen!
These people instead of joining the long lines of the unemployed, fend for themselves and many of them probably make a good living by doing
what they do. Some of these self employed are way better off than many low paying clerical jobs in India.
Images of India’s self employed
Took a walk around Delhi, India during a recent visit. Here are some photographs of some of India’s self employed. These people are in their own
way offering goods and services to the vast Indian population and make a decent living while not competing in India’s list of unemployed.
