Tata Nano — online booking information (historical)

By V. K. Chand·2 min read·Updated January 1, 2025

Note: this article is historical. The booking window below ran from April 9–25, 2009.

NRIs were eligible to purchase Tata Nano cars during the original booking window. Three trims were offered with different booking amounts:

  • Nano BS 2: ₹3,95,000
  • Nano CX BS 2/3: ₹1,20,000
  • Nano LX BS 3: ₹1,40,000

Booking methods

Offline. Applicants bought a ₹300 booking form from authorised retailers including SBI branches, Tata Motors dealerships, Croma outlets, and Westside stores. Each form had a unique identifier and could not be duplicated. Completed forms were submitted back to the same locations.

Online. The application form fee was reduced to ₹200 and added to the booking amount. The process involved completing an online form, paying through a third-party gateway via net banking, and receiving a transaction ID and unique identifier on confirmation.

Accepted payment methods included demand drafts, pay orders, and local cheques — but not credit cards.

Allocation

Tata Motors announced 100,000 successful applicants within 60 days using computerised random-number generation with external observers. Unsuccessful applicants were refunded (without interest) within 90 days unless they chose to stay in the queue.

Those who chose to wait could receive a vehicle in later allotments, earning 8.5% annual interest on the retained amount if the wait exceeded one year, or 8.75% if it exceeded two years. Final pricing reflected the delivery location and the price applicable on the delivery date.
