Q44. Taking Cars to India

Question: Dear Sir, I want to settle in India. I have a Ford Car 2006 model 2.0 L with me. I was using this for the past 3 years. What will be the customs charges for the car to take to India.

Kindly clarify Thanking you, S.Muthukumar

Answer: The rate of duty works out to around 181% on cars. You should be able to claim depreciation on the used car to determine value. Unless things have changed the depreciation allowed is For every quarter during 1st year 4%.

For every quarter during 2nd year 3% and for every quarter during 3rd year 2.5%. More information is provided on this website in the article "Taking Cars to India."
