Question: Hi, I am an Indian citizen currently residing in Tashkent Uzbekistan. As per the Customs rule, if a person has lived abroad for over a year, a person can buy jewelry worth- 50,000 - for gentlemen 100000- for women I am coming to India after almost 10 months. I want to purchase some regular jewellery for family. Upto how much INR can I buy for. Thank you for your response. Regards Talichila [February 15, 2016]

Answer: The amounts of Rupees 50,000 for women and 100,000 for men that you mention as ‘Customs rule’ are actually refers to the duty free allowance allowed when jewelry is brought in to India by a passenger as part of their baggage allowance. There is no restriction on the value of jewelery that visitors to India can purchase while visiting India. There is generally no Indian customs duty on goods being taken out of India by a passenger as part of their baggage as long as they are for personal and not for commercial purposes.
