Answer: With effect from August 26, 2013 duty free import of flat screen LCD & LED plasma television sets as part of baggage has been banned by the Government of India. The customs duty currently on televisions is 35% plus 3% cess. Total duty works out to 36.05%. Kindly be aware that the customs authorities are not bound to accept the price based on your receipt of purchase. They are aware of prices of various models of television sets and generally would use those figures as a guideline if they feel the prices shown on an invoice appears to be low and perhaps an attempt to save customs duty. Your price of Australian 599 dollars works out to around Rupees 30,000. Adding 36.05% takes the price to about 41,000. In India prices for HD, LED 55 inch Display 1920 x 1080 Pixels television sets start around 40,000 Rupees. Unless you are bringing a high end TV that saves you a reasonable amount of money, you may find it more feasible to buy in India. Warranty issues should also be considered.
