Q813. Lost OCI card in USA - How to travel to India

Question: I hope you can help me with this query. I am a US citizen with OCI card (born in India naturalized in US). I live in India but am currently on a business trip in Atlanta, USA. I have lost my OCI card but my US passport is intact. I am filing a police compliant regarding the same. I want to find out a few things:

  1. How do I re-enter India as my family is still there? If I produce my US passport with U sticker, would I be allowed? Or should I do anything else?
  2. Can I apply for OCI card when I get back to India? Thanks, Vijay

Answer: Their is a requirement by the authorities that in case of loss or theft of OCI card or a passport a police report must me made at the nearest police station. Proof of such a report is required when requesting a replacement. Report the loss of your OCI card (booklet) to a police station in the United States and get a copy of the report as proof. Then contact the nearest Indian consulate and explain your situation. Depending on how long you are in USA you may be able to get a replacement or if you do not have enough time, perhaps a entry document (visa) from the Indian consulate so you won’t face problems when entering India.
