Q889. How to get Refund of Excess TDS Paid in India

Question: Dear Sir , I had purchased a flat in the year 2015 and had paid TDS amounting to Rs. 50,000/-. Initially, After entering all the details for making the payment, the page went blank. So, we decided to do the same in the morning. When we did the payment in the morning, we came to know that, the payment had been done the previous day and we had done the transaction twice now. The same is reflected in the Traces. Now, how should we claim for the excess amount paid. If you can guide us in this regards, it would be very helpful to us. Regards, Renjith Rajan

Answer: Procedure requires a login to TRACES website using your registered credentials, then under the Statements/Payments section select Request for Refund and follow the prompts. Notification 11/2013 dated 19-02-2013 has inserted sub-rule 3A in Rule 31A of Income Tax Rules 1962 to provide the procedures to claim for refund of excess TDS deposited by deductors. You may consider speaking to an accountant for professional advice to cut through the red tape.
