Q932. Options for child born in New Zealand to Indian parents
Question: Hi There, I landed on your page via Google while searching for answers to some of my queries. The situation I have is as follows. Both me and my wife are Indian Citizens and also hold PR of New Zealand. Our daughter is now 7 months old and was born in New Zealand. As both me and my wife are PR of New Zealand so my Daughter got New Zealand Citizenship and Passport. We have returned to India around 3 months ago, permanently (most probably). We had to get entry visa for our daughter to bring her into India. As far as I understand, India does not allow dual citizenship and we don't want to lose her New Zealand citizenship and passport just yet. As we may want her to go back and do her schooling or university study in New Zealand which is free for NZ citizens. What are the options that we have, so she can hold onto her NZ citizenship and passport; and get to stay in India for next 10-15 years. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Shiv
Answer: A minor child born abroad is eligible for OCI even if both parents are Indian citizens. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) has the benefit of a lifelong visa for India. This may be a choice you can consider.
