Q995. Can Indian driving license be renewed from abroad? Renew Indian Driving License from UK

Question: Dear Sir, My Indian driving licence is expiring in March next year. I wish to renew it. I am residing in the United Kingdom and would like to know if I can renew it online. Kind regards

Answer: My understanding is that Indian driving license cannot be renewed online form abroad or even from within India. Furthermore, there is talk about requirement of Aadhaar card for Indian driving licenses effective April 2018. Linking of Aadhaar to driving license may be used to stop people from getting multiple driving licenses from different States in India to circumvent laws if their driving license is suspended. Apparently according to news reports there are a large number of fake or duplicate driving licenses currently in India. While some websites mention that Indian driving licenses can be renewed or obtained by submitting online forms, this does not appear to be true. Some years back there was talk of allowing such facilities but as far as I am aware, they were not implemented.
