Q1045. Attestation of US Divorce Documents for US Resident Indian Citizen
Question: Hello Mr. Chand I was married in India and divorced In USA. I have Indian Passport but I am a legal resident in USA. Is there a way to authenticate the US divorce Decree for use in India ? IF Yes who in India will do it? Thank you
Answer: I don’t know for what purpose you want to get a US court issued document authenticated. You state in your email that you are resident in USA and the only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps you can get the document attested at the Indian consulate in your area of residence. The seal of the Indian consulate would be recognized across India compared to getting this done by a Notary. Indian consulates require that documents to be attested to be apostilled by the relevant authorities in the USA before approaching the consulate for attestation. Check before you go to the consulate, they generally have the procedure posted on their websites. Is divorce by US Court valid in India?
