Q1097. Foreigner erroneously used Form 49A meant for Indian citizens to apply for and get PAN card.

Question: Dear Sir/MA'am, I am a foreign national (of Indian origin) currently settled in India and had applied for PAN in Form 49A (meant for Indian citizens) instead of Form 49AA which is meant for foreign nationals. I have received a PAN Card accordingly. Please advise whether and how if I have to make any fresh applications for correcting the erroneous jnput and wrong form used. Will appreciate an early reply. With regards

Answer: PAN Card is for life and in cases of error I doubt if the authorities simply want applicants to fill new forms and get another PAN Card. In fact the same person holding two PAN Cards would be illegal. There is a provision to make corrections on PAN data through the online PAN corrections form. If you accidentally used the wrong form when filling the application and provided correct proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth with your PAN application; you could simply contact the authorities and notify them of your foreign citizenship status.
