281. How to buy agricultural land in India legally

Q. Dear Sir, I am a resident of Maharashtra India and want to purchase agricultural land. I have been looking around for a long time and have now found out that only a farmer can buy agricultural land in India. How can I become a farmer if I can't buy agricultural land? what is the law here and is there a way I can buy agricultural land. Who can tell me how-to buy agricultural land in India. Joshi (Malad, Mumbai) A. To buy agricultural land in the State of Maharashtra, one must be a farmer. How does one prove that they are farmers? Have existing farm land in their name Have a relative who is a farmer, this can be even grandparents etc. Proof of working on a farm as an agricultural worker I am not aware of any other way of buying agricultural land in Maharashtra. However, not all States in India have the same rules. I believe in the state of Madhya Pradesh or Andhra Pradesh agricultural land purchases are not restricted to farmers only. You need not be a farmer to buy agricultural land in these states. In case some one bought some agricultural land in some other state of India that did not have any restrictions and used the ownership of this agricultural land to later purchase agricultural land in Maharashtra, there is a possibility that you may meet the requirements. Check with a lawyer in Maharashtra whether this is a possibility. I believe in 2006, Amitabh Bachchan used the land given to him in UP as a foundation for buying agricultural land in Pune, Maharashtra.
