Change address on PAN Card

By V. K. Chand·5 min read·Updated April 17, 2026

First, a clarification

The PAN card itself doesn't carry your address. The physical card shows only your name, father's/mother's name, date of birth, PAN number, photograph, and signature. There is no address field printed on the card, so there is nothing to "change" on the card itself.

What people actually mean by "change address on PAN" is updating the address the Income Tax Department holds against your PAN in its database. This matters because:

  • Official notices and communications go to that address
  • Some banks, registrars, and government offices cross-check the address you give them against the one linked to your PAN
  • Refund cheques (rare these days — most are electronic) and physical PAN reprints are sent there

The Two Official Channels

PAN issuance and correction are handled by two authorised agencies on behalf of the Income Tax Department:

Either portal can be used. Use the one where your PAN was originally issued if you still have the acknowledgement, otherwise either works.

Note: The old URL https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/ that circulates in older guides is no longer active. NSDL e-Gov has been renamed Protean eGov Technologies and the service has moved to the address above.

How to Update Your Address via Protean (formerly NSDL)

  1. Go to https://www.protean-tinpan.com.
  2. Under Services → PAN, select "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)".
  3. Fill the online form with your PAN number, name as on PAN, and contact details.
  4. Tick the box next to "Address for Communication" to flag that you are updating the address field.
  5. Enter the new address and upload supporting proof of address.
  6. Pay the fee online (card, UPI, net banking):
    • Indian address: around Rs. 110
    • Foreign address: around Rs. 1,020 (higher, to cover international dispatch if a physical card reprint is requested)
  7. Choose e-KYC via Aadhaar (fastest — OTP-based, no physical paperwork) or scan-and-upload or physical submission by courier.
  8. Note the 15-digit acknowledgement number generated at the end.

If you opt for physical submission, print the acknowledgement, affix two recent passport-size photographs, sign in the designated places, and courier it with self-attested proof of address to the Protean office in Pune listed on the acknowledgement.

How to Update via UTIITSL

The flow is similar at https://www.pan.utiitsl.com: select "Change/Correction in PAN Card", fill the form, upload documents, and pay. Fees and timelines are broadly the same.

Via the Income Tax e-Filing Portal (Aadhaar-Linked PANs)

If your PAN is linked to your Aadhaar and your Aadhaar already carries the correct address, you can use the "Update personal details" flow on the Income Tax e-filing portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in/. The address from Aadhaar is pulled through directly — no separate proof upload needed, no fee.

This route is generally the easiest, but it only works when (a) you have an Aadhaar, and (b) your Aadhaar already shows the address you want on PAN. Most NRIs without Aadhaar will need to use Protean or UTIITSL instead.

Acceptable Proof of New Address

Any one of the following, in the name of the PAN holder:

  • Aadhaar (if linked)
  • Passport (showing the current address)
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving licence
  • Bank account statement or passbook (not older than 3 months)
  • Credit card statement (not older than 3 months)
  • Electricity, landline, broadband, or gas bill (not older than 3 months)
  • Post office passbook
  • Property tax receipt / property registration document
  • Domicile certificate issued by Government
  • Employer's certificate on letterhead

For NRIs with a Foreign Address

NRIs updating to an overseas address can submit:

  • Copy of passport (name and address pages)
  • Copy of OCI/PIO card if applicable
  • Copy of bank account statement in the country of residence
  • Copy of a registered lease agreement or similar address document issued by the country of residence
  • Copy of NRE/NRO bank statement in India

All foreign-issued documents should be either attested by the Indian Embassy/Consulate of the country concerned or by an Apostille (for Hague Convention countries).

Timeline

  • Aadhaar-based e-KYC flow: address is updated in the PAN record within a few working days
  • Scan-and-upload flow: typically 2–3 weeks after successful verification
  • Physical courier flow: 3–4 weeks after documents are received by the agency

If you asked for a reprinted PAN card, delivery takes an extra 1–2 weeks in India and longer abroad.

Does an Old Address Invalidate the PAN?

No. Your PAN is valid regardless of where you live or what address is on file. You can continue to quote it for banking, property, and tax transactions even if the department still has your old address. Updating is about making sure you receive any communications — it is not a condition for the PAN to work.

Quick Checklist

  • Decide whether to use Protean, UTIITSL, or the Income Tax portal (Aadhaar-linked)
  • Gather proof of new address (under 3 months old where applicable)
  • For overseas addresses: get documents attested at the Indian Mission or apostilled
  • Complete the online form and upload or courier the proof
  • Pay the fee (Rs. 110 for Indian address, ~Rs. 1,020 for foreign address)
  • Note the acknowledgement number and keep it until the update is confirmed
