How to Change Your Address on OCI — Step by Step
OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders are expected to keep their personal particulars — including residential address — up to date with the Government of India. If you move within the same country, move between countries, or change between a US/UK/Canada address and an Indian address, the change should be recorded through the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal. Here is the exact process.
Do You Actually Have to Notify a Change of Address?
Yes. Under the Ministry of Home Affairs rules governing OCI, cardholders are required to notify:
- Change of residential address
- Change of occupation
- Issue of a new passport (separate service — see the OCI card guide)
The requirement is modest — there is no fine for a minor delay — but the address on record is used by the Indian Mission when they need to reach you, and also matters if you later apply for any other OCI service (replacement, renewal, name correction) where the address on record is cross-checked.
What Service You Will Use
Address changes are handled through the OCI Miscellaneous Services online system at https://ociservices.gov.in/onlineOCI/. This is the same portal used for:
- Replacement of a lost or damaged OCI card
- Name or date-of-birth corrections
- Updating the passport number when you renew your passport
- Changes to personal particulars such as address and occupation
A plain address update does not result in a new OCI booklet or sticker — the card itself is not reprinted. Your registration record is updated, and you get an acknowledgement.
Before You Start — Information You Will Need
Keep these handy before you log in:
- Passport number currently linked to your OCI
- OCI Registration number or U-Visa number or OCI File number
- Date of birth or Mother's name as recorded in the OCI registration certificate (one of these is asked as a verification question)
- Your new residential address with pin/zip code
- A scanned passport-size photograph (recent, light background, as per Indian passport photo specs)
- A scanned signature (black ink on white paper)
- Proof of new address (see list below)
Acceptable Proof of New Address
Any one of the following, showing your name and the new address:
- Utility bill (electricity, gas, water, landline) — not older than 3 months
- Bank statement or a letter from a bank
- Driving licence showing the updated address
- Lease / rental agreement with landlord's details
- Property tax receipt or property deed, if owned
- Any government-issued ID or letter showing the new address (e.g., state ID, voter registration letter)
For an Indian address, an Aadhaar card, voter ID, or utility bill works. For a US address, a driver's licence with the new address or a recent utility bill is usually the easiest.
Step-by-Step Process
- Go to https://ociservices.gov.in/onlineOCI/ and click "Click Here To Proceed".
- Select OCI Miscellaneous Services from the menu.
- Answer the verification question and click Enter.
- Enter your passport number, your OCI registration/U-Visa/file number, and either your date of birth or mother's name exactly as recorded on the OCI registration certificate. Any mismatch at this step blocks further access — use the exact spelling and format.
- From the list of services, select the option that covers change of particulars / change of address.
- Complete the online form with:
- Current address on record
- New address
- Effective date of the move
- Any change in occupation, if applicable
- Upload the photograph and signature in the specified formats (usually JPEG, under the file-size limit shown on the portal).
- Submit the form online. A reference number is generated — note it down.
- Print the filled form and sign it by hand on the indicated pages.
- Prepare the physical submission pack:
- Printed and signed application
- Copy of your current passport (photo and address pages)
- Copy of your OCI card / U-Visa sticker (both sides)
- Proof of new address (from the list above)
- Passport-size photograph matching the uploaded one
- Fee payment as instructed on the portal (usually online; some jurisdictions still ask for a money order or bank draft)
- Submit the pack to the competent authority:
- Outside India: the Indian Mission, Consulate, or its authorised outsourcing company (VFS, Cox & Kings, BLS, etc.) covering your jurisdiction of residence
- In India: the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) or FRO of the district where you reside
Fees
Fees vary by the service sub-category and location; the portal confirms the exact amount before you pay:
- Outside India: typically around US$ 25 (or local equivalent) for change of particulars such as address. Some outsourcing agencies add a small service fee.
- In India: typically Rs. 1,400 paid to FRRO.
A plain address update is among the cheapest misc services. If you combine it with a new passport endorsement or a name correction, fees for those items are charged separately and added.
Timeline
- Online submission and acknowledgement: immediate
- Physical submission processing: usually 2 to 4 weeks at the Indian Mission / FRRO
- Record update: you typically receive an email confirmation and updated registration certificate by mail or for download
If you do not receive any acknowledgement within 30 days, contact the Mission or FRRO with your reference number.
Moving From Abroad to India (or Vice Versa)
- Moving to India long-term: update your OCI address to the Indian residential address via FRRO. If you will stay in India continuously for more than 180 days, some states also expect a registration with the local FRRO — separate from the address update.
- Moving back abroad from India: update the OCI record with your new overseas address via the relevant Indian Mission. Also ensure your NRO / NRE bank accounts and PAN address are updated — these are not automatic from the OCI side.
If You Have a New Passport Too
Many people update their address at the same time as they renew their passport. The portal allows you to do both in a single application (select "change of passport details" and "change of address" together). Do not skip the passport update — travelling to India on an OCI card that is not linked to your current passport still requires you to carry the old passport or obtain a transfer sticker. See the separate guide on transferring your OCI sticker to a new passport.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not matching the OCI registration data exactly at the login step — spellings, hyphens, and dates of birth must match the certificate
- Using an outdated utility bill — most missions reject address proof older than 3 months
- Forgetting to sign the printed form — unsigned applications are routinely returned
- Submitting to the wrong jurisdiction — each Mission serves specific states/provinces; check the list before mailing
- Assuming no action is needed just because your passport is still valid — the passport and the OCI address are tracked separately
Quick Checklist
- Verified login data matches your OCI registration exactly
- Completed the online misc-services form for change of address
- Uploaded photo and signature in correct format
- Printed and signed the form
- Attached proof of new address (under 3 months old)
- Paid the fee per portal instructions
- Sent the physical pack to the correct Mission / FRRO
- Retained a copy of everything and the reference number
Keeping the OCI record current is a 30-minute online exercise plus one trip to the post office. Doing it when you move — rather than when you next need an OCI service — avoids scrambling for address proof at the worst possible moment.
