Aadhaar is India’s version of the American social security card or Canada’s social security number. India’s Aadhaar card is a 12 digit individual identification number. Aadhaar numbers are issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India. Aadhaar cards will eventually serve as a proof of identity and address, across India. In future the will also help linking to other government subsidies and schemes.

Who can apply for Aadhaar Card

Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) can apply for Aadhaar card. NRIs, PIO’s as well as foreigners, living in India can apply for Aadhaar card and it is given free of cost to all applicants.

Aadhaar Card

Any foreign citizen residing in India can apply for Aadhaar. Aadhaar card is meant for establishing unique identity of residents of India. It has nothing to do with a persons citizenship nor can Aadhaar card be used as proof of Indian citizenship.

How to apply for Aadhaar Card

There are authorized Locate the nearest Aadhaar enrollment centers all across India, locate the center near your location. Go to the enrollment center with identity and address proof to apply. 1.Go to the nearest enrollment center fill application and provide the required documents (list below) 2.Your Application data is then entered into the system data base 3.Your finger prints are taken, a digital photograph and Iris capture done. 4.Once documents verified, Aadhaar number is issued. Time frame is supposed to be about 60 - 90 days from completing the above formalities, however expect to wait three plus months.

You will need your enrollment number, date and time provided by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) at the time of registration to check the status of your Aadhaar card on-line. Both date and time fields are required.
