Information on getting date of birth changed on Indian Passport

There are times that some people who currently hold a passport will find that their date of birth may not be shown correctly. There can be various reasons for such a discrepancy however, this article is not to discuss such reasons but to highlight how situations where an incorrect date of birth on a passport can be corrected. This article should give readers an idea of what the current rules are in regard to getting an incorrect date of birth changed on an Indian Passport. Change of date of birth on Indian passport can be done under the following circumstances: If change is requested within five years of from the date of issue of the passport that has the wrong date of birth. There is one exception to this five year rule, see below . . . In case the passport having the wrong date of birth was issued when the passport holder was a minor. Then application for correcting date of birth on passport should be filed upon attaining the age of majority. In such cases the five year rule does not apply and the Passport Issuing Authorities (PIA) can consider such requests regardless of the date of issue.

Change date of birth on passport within five years

For requests made for change of date of birth within five years that are based on other supportive documents and not on certificate from Registrar of Births and Deaths, then the passport issuing authorities are required to levy a penalty on the applicant for obtaining a passport by providing wrong information regarding their date of birth in the earlier passport application. In such cases, upon acceptance of documents and payment of penalty and applicable passport fee, a fresh passport is issued with the revised date of birth. The Ministry of External Affairs has advised the Passport Issuing Authorities to reject applications for change of date of birth where applicants apply after a period of five years since the issue of passport.
