How to get IDP, documents required to get IDP & where to apply for IDP in India
International driver licenses are referred to as IDP [International Driving Permit] this type of document is generally issued by the licensing authority of a country to enable their citizens to drive while visiting other countries. Generally they are valid for a one year period. Any Indian citizen who wishes to drive when visiting abroad should apply for IDP prior to leaving India. In India IDP is issued by the licensing authority in India or a few authorized automobile associations. Applications can be made to the authorized licensing authority in the area where the applicant resides. Relevant documents such as proof of residence are required, so its important to apply accordingly to the office that has jurisdiction over the area of your residence. The following are some of the documents applicants need to get IDP: Form 4A. This is the application form required for issue of International Driving Permit. Form 1A (Medical Certificate) A sample form is available HERE Valid Driving License. Valid Indian Passport. Valid Visa (where applicable). Three copies of recent passport size photographs. Appropriate Fee [Currently fee is Rupees 500.] Applicants should submit the required documents along with the applicable fee to the District/Regional Transport Office in their region. The time frame to get IDP after submission of documents is generally seven working days, however may take as much as 30 days.Validity of International Driving License issued in India
The validity of IDP issued in India is one year or until the IDP holder’s Indian driving license is valid, whichever is earlier. Both IDP and valid driving license of your home country are required to drive abroad. International Driving Permits issued in India cannot be renewed, a new application is required.
