Latest information on OCI Card in Lieu of Pan Card

The last day for conversion from PIO card to OCI is December 31, 2017. This extension of date was announced on June 27, 2017. The date for conversion from PIO cards to OCI has been extended on a few occasions in the past also. On January 8, 2017 while speaking at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bengaluru, Prime Minister Modi also reminded PIO card holders who have not yet converted their PIO cards to OCI to do so at the earliest, reminding them that the last date for free conversion of PIO Card to OCI was set to be June 30, 2017. Those PIO card holders who have still not converted their PIO to OCI should indeed heed the advice of the Prime Minister and apply for OCI in lieu of PIO cards as soon as possible so that they do not miss the deadline.

All PIO cards issued till 09.01.2015 are deemed to be OCI card. PIO Card scheme has been withdrawn vide Gazette Notification No.25024/9/2014F.I dated 09.01.2015. Applicants can now apply for OCI card ONLY, as PIO card scheme is no longer in existence. Updated information on requirement of registration for OCI in lieu of PIO cards: Date of submission of online applications by PIO cardholders with valid PIO cards as on 09 January 2015 for registration as OCI card holder in lieu of PIO card has now been further extended till 30th June, 2017. o To view the date of extension notice by government CLICK HERE Applicants may submit the applications for OCI card in lieu of PIO card to the Embassy, Consulates or FRRO concerned within the Consular jurisdiction of their place of residence regardless of the location where their PIO card was issued earlier. In cases of former PIO cardholders, the new foreign passport number (when they get a new passport) will be endorsed on the existing PIO card till the person concerned is issued an OCI card in lieu of PIO card. PIO cardholders can travel to India on the basis of their valid PIO card and valid foreign passport. Grant of OCI card in lieu of PIO card is currently free however, applicants may have to bear postage charges and service fee wherever applicable.
