183. Can I buy agricultural land in India?
Q: Person is foreign citizen but of Indian Origin, holding an OCI card.
* Person has been living in India continuously for past 8 years.
* Person has been employed in India and has been paying taxes in India during this time.
From RBI definition, he is a PIO but Resident in India.
Is he allowed to purchase agricultural land/farm?
Thanks
Vinod Dasari
A. Legally No!
Many foreign non resident Indians are probably not aware that in India today, in most states even local Indian citizens cannot
legally buy agricultural land unless they come from a family of farmers.
