224. Renounce British citizenship to reclaim Indian citizenship
Q: Dear Mr Chand,
I have visited your website and found it very useful.I would be very grateful for some urgent advice.
I am an Indian national living in Uk for the last 10 yrs.I recently one month ago took British citizenship by naturalisation and was
thinking of applying for a British passport and OCI card, however now I regret having taken the citizenship and feel very depressed
becoming a foreigner in my own county India where I finally plan to setlle in the next few years.
I also took citizenship for my son and only now came to know that he cannot renounce it before 18 yrs.I know OCI does provide benefits
but I simply cannot imagine myself being a foreigner in my own country and this made me feel very anxious,Also I did research and
came to know although eligible with OCI,it may be difficult to reclaim the Indian citizenship even after renouncing Indian citizenship So
now I am thinking of renouncing the British Citizenship (may take
couple of months) and retain my Indian nationality and citizenship.
My question is Would there be any problem as I would have been British only for a few months and haven’t yet surrendered my Indian
passport. Also can I apply for my sons Indian citizenship later on but before he is 18 yrs.
I would be extremely grateful for your advice.
Many Thanks,
SA
A. I don't know which research showed you that it may be difficult to reclaim Indian citizenship. OCI holders may be
granted Indian citizenship after 5 years from date of registration as OCI provided they stay in India for one year before
making application for citizenship.
Before renouncing your British citizenship I think you should first speak to the Indian consulate officials in your area
about the procedure to get back your Indian citizenship.
You should surrender your Indian passport within 90 days of acquiring British citizenship. So you need to act as soon as
possible.
Regards to your son, you will just have to wait until he reaches the age of majority. You cannot renounce British
citizenship for him.
