273. Renouncing British Citizenship by minor
Q: Dear Sir,
I am a NRI living in Britain. My son is born here in Britain and has no passport for now but he will be eligible for British passport by the end
of
this year once i get ILR. He We have plans to go back to India in 5 years.
If we go to settle in India with my son on British passport, Can he relinquish his British passport and get Indian passport if needed?
I wonder registering his birth in Indian embassy and getting an Indian passport before obtaining British passport for him will make things
any
easier for the future settlement in India?
Many thanks
Prakash
A. Those who are under 18 years of age cannot renounce British Citizenship. The only exception here is that if someone
under age 18 is married, they are treated as meeting the age of majority requirement and can renounce their citizenship.
Getting your child an Indian passport may help you avoid additional schooling fees that some schools charge from foreign
children. The other side of the coin is that your child might want to return and settle in UK at some point of his life.
Consult a immigration/citizenship lawyer in UK before you take any steps so as to make an informed decision on your child's
future. There is a time frame to register births at Indian consulates so don't wait too long.
