297. Can Parent buy agricultural land in India with money received from abroad

Q: Dear Sir / Madam, I am a NRI residing currently in the US. I have learnt through your website that NRI's are not allowed to buy agricultural land in India. Nonetheless, since NRI's are allowed to send gifts to their blood relatives then can I send money to my father's resident account in India and then can he buy agricultural land on his name from that gifted money. Thanks Trip A. Yes, you can send money to your father or to anyone in India as a gift. There is no requirement that the person you are gifting money to should be a blood relative. If your father is an Indian citizen, living in India in a state that allows purchase of agricultural land by non-farmers, then he can buy agricultural land in India.
