299. Medical Insurance choices for senior citizens in India

Q: Hello I am us citizen with Indian origin. I am 66 years old. I am planning to settle in India. Can I buy medical insurance in India, if so who can do that Ravi A. Those who are over 50 years of age in India have limited options when it comes to selecting medical insurance in India. Many companies do not even offer insurance to people who are over age 60. The older a person is, the harder it becomes to get medical insurance. Medical insurance companies, that do offer policies to senior citizens, sell them policies that have a lower sum insured and greater premium. Insurance companies such as Bajaj Allianz, National Insurance, Star Health and Allied insurance do offer medical insurance policies to persons over age 60. For example: Bajaj Allianz provides insurance for seniors up to age 70 the maximum insured is Rupees 5 lakhs. National Insurance up to age 80 maximum insured up to Rupees one Lakh. Star Health and Allied Insurance up to age 69 max Rupees two lakhs. So how far does Rupees 5 lakhs go when medical treatment in India is considered? not far enough. Seniors from abroad who wish to settle in India should have a backup of some money so as to self insure themselves against medical expenses even if they get medical insurance in India.
