301. Customs duty in India on gold

Q: Sir, I am Indian and traveling to India on coming September also I am planning to take 10 tola gold bar with me. Could you please tell me the exact duty I need to pay in custom. Gold bars were charged a duty of Rupees 250 but this has now gone up to Rupees 300 per 10 grams. The duty on tola bars and ornaments is rupees 750 per 10 grams. You need to be aware that to take gold as baggage: Passenger should be going to India after a period of not less than six months of stay abroad. Duty must be paid in convertible foreign currency. The weight of gold (including ornaments) should not exceed 10 kgs. per passenger. Update: Customs duty on gold taken to India has changed for current info see question/answer number 8
