FROM (Name Withheld by Admin) Answer: For children under 16 years of age whose parents are divorced, applications for Canadian passports can be made by the parent who has custody of the child. In such cases, Passport Canada officials may also contact the other parent to confirm status. In cases where joint custody provisions exist, both parents need to apply for the child to ensure there are no disputes. There have been many cases of international child abduction by parents. Passport officials are more vigilant these days when it comes to issuing of passports for children of divorced parents. Since your divorce was done with a mutual understanding, you should contact your ex-husband and jointly sort the matter of getting your divorce documents that are acceptable to the Canadian authorities.
