479. Advantages and Disadvantages of having OCI for British passport holder

Questions: Dear sir, I am writing to you to address my queries for OCI holders. I am having a British passport and I am confused whether I should apply for an OCI card. I wanted to know the advantages and the disadvantages of having an OCI. Mainly I want to know that since I have a property on my name in India(A flat), is it necessary to transfer it on anyone else's name or can I still have the property on my name? And am I still eligible to but a residential property on my name in India? It would be very kind of you if you could to assist me with my query. Thanking You, Yours faithfully, M. D'costa. Answer: If you are seeking a long term visa for India, then you have the choice of getting a PIO card or apply for OCI. A comparison of the various benefits of OCI with PIO card are posted on this website and can be viewed by clicking HERE. Having OCI or PIO does not in any way affect the ownership of property that an individual already owns in India. If you are of Indian origin, you can buy property in India regardless of whether you have OCI or not.
