Q606. Preparing foreign school for University admission in India . . .

Question: Dear Sir, Thanks for updating us through you website, I regularly visits your website for information. Now I have a question, please answer me: Good Morning to you. My name is Prasanna, my wife and I are Indians (born and brought up in Andhra Pradesh), after completing my masters from PSG college of Technology, I had moved to Singapore and working here, got married, now we are permanent residents of Singapore. My children were born here but still they hold the Indian passport, so technically they are Indian citizens. Currently my son who is 8 years of old, studying in DPS Indian international school in Singapore. Now, we are thinking of relocating back to India for children education purpose (either to Bangalore or Visakha Patnam). Basically, my question is when is the right class for me to enroll my kid in Indian school in India, so that when he comes to university age, I should be considered as Indian citizen, so that I can able to pay Indian citizen fee rather than NRI fee. I want to him in universities in India as an Indian citizen not as an NRI, which year should we need to enroll in Indian schools in India (is it after class 7? or after class 8?). May I have your advice on this. Best Regards, D Prasanna Kumar Answer: I am assuming that all of you hold Indian passports, if that is the case, when you re-locate to India you will no longer be a NRI, hence the question of NRI fee should not arise considering that you and your children hold Indian passports. So if your sole reason for moving to India is to avoid paying high NRI school fees, whether you move when your child is in grade 7 or 8 will make no difference.

Foreign students preparing to get admission in Indian Universities

Generally students who seek admission in Indian universities, the academic documents required at the time of admission are: Class X Board Examination Certificate* Class X mark sheet Class XII mark sheet Class XII Certificate Most children coming to India from abroad require some period of time to adjust to the Indian schooling system, how much time to adjust of course would depend on the student. School age children coming from USA need a lot of time to adjust to the Indian teaching syllabus. A child studying in grade VIII in USA would find it very difficult to study in grade VIII in India. Schooling in USA is in my opinion, not at par with Indian standards. Perhaps this is the reason children going to USA from Indian schools usually preform well. Since you are based in Singapore, I have a feeling that your children should be better prepared to adjust to Indian schools. Transferring to Indian schools in class 7 or even 8 should be fine as this would give them two or three years to adjust and prepare for the class X exams. Admissions to Indian Universities is quite competitive, students may have to cope with cut off marks set by Universities each year. Getting used to the Indian study and marking system in advance is definitely a plus for any foreign student who plans on continuing their education at a university in India.
*CBSE board exams for X class exams in India are being abolished and being replaced by exams conducted by their respective schools. However class X results may still remain an important factor for admissions to higher classes.
