Q615. No requirement to sell Indian property on acquiring foreign citizenship
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a NRI and now planning to apply for the citizenship in Singapore. Currently I have
properties in India. the property was inherited from my father as a gift.
If I get Singapore citizenship, can I hold my india property or I need to sell or transfer
the property before getting the Singapore citizenship?
Thanks,
With Regards,
Mathan
Answer: Acquiring foreign citizenship or shall I say Singapore citizenship will not effect
your property rights related to any property you held prior to taking foreign citizenship.
Even foreigners can inherit and hold property in India. Citizenship has no effect when it
comes to acquiring property by way of inheritance.
So you can continue to hold your Indian property or sell it as per your wish.
