Answer: How to revoke power of attorney given in India from
abroad is answered in question 623 on this website.
The procedure to revoke a Power of Attorney (POA) would actually
depend on the type of POA given. Please refer to question/answer
# 623 for more information on this topic.
Generally the procedure to revoke a Power of Attorney in India is:
•
Get document prepared to revoke the previously issued POA
•
Get stamp of your local Indian consulate/embassy if abroad. Consulate will charge a small service fee for this
purpose.
•
Get revocation document registered in India, preferably at the same Sub-Registrar office where the original POA
was registered.
•
Send a notification to the person who was given the POA that is now being revoked, preferably by registered
post.
•
Publish a public notice in a newspaper which has reasonable circulation in the city where the original POA was
issued. NRIs may opt to also to place a notice in a newspaper where they reside.
A lawyer should be able to handle all this for a nominal fee.
