Q.976 Helpful article on rules for import of cars by NRIs - Recommend broker

Question: Thank you for an extremely helpful article on rules around import of cars by NRIs when repatriating back to India. Extremely precise and useful. I took note of your suggestion of having the services of a custom agent to navigate through the processes in India. I was wondering if you had any suggestions around who or how could I get information on some suitable custom agent in this regard. Appreciate your assistance here. Regards Rakesh Patwari Answer: Finding reliable, honest professionals in India for services such as accountants, lawyers, real estates agents and as you mention customs brokers is an important for many NRIs seeking professional services that they may require. I have been asked for recommendations quite often and in the past, so in an effort to compile a list of recommended professionals in India, I had asked visitors of this website to send a recommendation if they had themselves used such professional services and were satisfied. The idea behind this was that instead of recommending someone based only on hearsay, to recommend people who had provided satisfactory professional services to other NRIs. Sadly, despite the numerous responses I got with names and numbers of real estate agents, lawyers, dentists, accountants etc. I ended up recommending no one! the reason being that the bulk of the responses were from people just trying to get free publicity for themselves. To find a customs broker for your car import to India, you will have to either check with friends or relatives in India or perhaps use the Internet to find the customs broker you feel meets your need and time line. If you do find one who is satisfactory and meets your expectations, do share the information and perhaps other NRIs may get the benefit of your experience.
