Q.988 Minor child must surrender Indian passport if getting Dutch passport

Question: Hello Sir I have been reading your website and wanted to thank you for maintaining so much information. I had a question on my situation and was hoping that you can help me with some input. I am in Netherlands with my wife and 2 year old son. My Son was born in India and has a Indian passport and birth certificate. I have applied for dutch passport for myself and my son. I need to give away my Indian passport and take OCI however it is not clear what happens for minors. Can they continue to hold both passports till age of 18 or even they have to submit the Indian passport and take OCI. Looking forward to your answer. vinay dwivedi Answer: While dual citizenship is allowed only in some circumstances to Dutch passport holders, India does NOT allow dual citizenship. As per Indian rules, Indian passport must be surrendered when foreign citizenship is acquired by any of its citizens. Even your 2 year old son cannot keep two passports, the Indian passport will have to be surrendered if you opt for a Dutch passport for him. Your son when he turns 18 years of age, since he is born in India will then have an option to either renounce his Dutch citizenship and opt for Indian citizenship or continue to retain Dutch citizenship. India does not allow anyone to hold Indian passport along with a foreign passport under any circumstances. Get guidance from the Indian consulate in your area for the options you have so that you can make an informed decision.
