Q.1102 Mobile SIM Card for tourists visiting India . . . Free!
Question: Sir
I am an OCI with UK passport. I visit india every year for two to three months.
I do not have address in India. I stay in my relative house.
How can I get a phone sim to use in India. Also I am not eligible to get Aadhar card.
Please advice.
Regards
Answer: There is a lot of confusion on Mobile Phone SIM Cards these days in India due to proposed rules requiring linking
of Aadhaar Card Number to Sim Cards. As a resident of UK you are not a resident of India and hence not eligible for
Aadhaar as per current rules.
While you are in India you can get a Sim card from an authorized outlet of the mobile phone provider you wish to use.
Tourists can get Sim cards that have a validity of their visa or a maximum of three months. Since you only stay about three
months this should work out for you.
Tourists requesting Sim cards will need to submit documents such as:
•
A photocopy of the personal details page of their passport.
•
A photocopy of their Indian visa. [OCI U Visa in your case]
•
A photocopy of the proof of home address in their country of residence. [ Such as, passport, driver’s license etc.]
•
Proof of where they will be staying in India. [ A document from a hotel confirming guest status will also work]
Free Sim Card for tourists on arrival
Free Sim card for tourists arriving in India was a scheme that was announced last year and was supposed to start by end
of September 2016, however, more than a year after the announcement, there appears to be no implementation in this
regard.
