Q.1149 My PIO Card expires in 2022 - Can I Travel to India with PIO

Question: Dear Sir/madame I am holding a Pio card which expires on 4 apr 2022. I have not converted my PIO to OCI. Can i travel to india using my PIO card. Answer: Whether you can travel to India on the basis of your PIO card would depend on the date you will be traveling to India. Read on From October 2018, International Civil Aviation Organization will accept only machine readable travel documents. Anyone arriving in India from October 1, 2018 onwards without machine readable travel documents may risk being denied entry.

How PIO card holders will be effected

PIO Cards are not machine readable as they are hand written. Hence from October 1, 2018 they will not be accepted as travel documents. On the other hand, OCI cards are machine readable. PIO card holders who have so far not opted to apply for OCI in lieu of PIO should do so as soon as possible, or their entry into India on the basis of PIO card may not possible from October 1, 2018. From October 1, 2018 PIO card holders may have to opt for other types of visas to enter India despite having PIO cards. It is in their own interest to apply for OCI as soon as possible and avoid the hassle of applying for visas every time they travel to India. Since the free OCI in lieu of PIO deadline of December 31, 2017 has passed, PIO card holders will be charged the full OCI fee when they apply for OCI.
