Answer: Help from various government and social agencies is available for wives of NRIs who may face harassment from
their husbands or in laws while in India or abroad. There is no reason for women to suffer or be afraid of taking steps to
protect themselves from abuse. However to offer help the authorities must be contact and a report lodged.
The Government of India has taken NRI wife abandonment very seriously and NRI husbands who abandon their wives
without cause or abuse their wives may face the risk of:
•
Having their passports canceled
•
Having their property seized [government is considering such a proposal]
I am not aware of any specific NRI police departments in Coimbatore, Bangalore or Tiruppur Tamil Nadu. However you
could contact the National Commission for Women for help. They will help contact the appropriate authorities and your
husband to ensure that you get justice.
National Commission for Women helps NRI women abandoned by their husbands. Their website lists their contact
numbers and email address. Even from USA you can lodge a complaint on their website. Here is the link to their web-page
for online complaints. http://www.ncw.nic.in/Default.aspx [Click the link titled ‘Complaint against NRI’ in the left column
to access the online complaint form.]
In foreign countries where wives are abandoned by husbands, there are laws that offer protection to such women to
protect their safety and even financially. Husbands cannot simply walk away from their financial obligations by abandoning
their wives.
Options for abandoned NRI wives
In addition to contacting the National Commission for Women, other options for abused wives are:
•
Approach the local police. Any type of violence should be immediately be reported to the local police. They will
ensure that you are protected.
•
Contact the nearest India Embassy or Consulate office. They will help guide you by providing help and if required
even arrange for your travel to India if it is required. In some cases where deemed necessary, they may even provide
financial help.
•
Many NGO, Social services are available to help abandoned women. Check you local phone directory listings for such
agencies.
•
Consider seeking legal help to protect your financial interest. If unable to hire a lawyer due to financial restraints,
contact legal aid services for help
