Q.1189 Apostille USA issued document in India at US Consulate . . .
Question: Dear Sir
My daughter who is 20year old is applying for OCl card from india. She is US citizen by birth.but lived in india since 20
years .Recently got her indian visa legalized after overstaying from MHA delhi. Her birth certificate needs to be Apostled
or endorsed by the concerned indian mission.
Can it be done at Chennai US embassy as i was told by FRRO bangalore to approach them.
Thanks in advance.

Answer: My understanding is that US issued documents must be Apostilled in USA from the State that issued the
original document. For example a US born in California would have to get their birth certificate apostilled in California.
Each US State issues Apostilles for their own State issued documents and maintain a website to help explain the
procedure of obtaining an Apostille.
The US Consulates do provide notary services for their citizens by appointment. Call the US Consulate for complete
information. The timings for the Chennai US Consulate are: Monday through Friday from 9:00 am. to 12:30 pm. [Closed
the last Wednesday of every month] Chennai US Consulate phone number is (0)44-2857-4000
If FRRO Bangalore has told you to app approach the Chennai US Consulate you should check with them.
