Q.1201 Renew Indian passport in UAE – No Indian address
Question: Dear Sir,
If a Non Resident Indian , does not have any accommodation in India but has a permanent accommodation abroad , will
the Indian Embassy abroad (UAE) renew passport ? If answer is negative, please advise the remedy.
Thanks and regards,
Answer: While there is no requirement for NRI’s renewing their Indian passports abroad to have a permanent address
in India. Most non-resident Indian passport holders probably do not have any Indian address when they move abroad
for settlement purposes.
However UAE passport renewal forms do ask for an Indian address perhaps because people are there for temporary
employment. Many people I assume provide their parents/relatives Indian addresses for such purposes. When
renewing your passport it is best that the particulars of your expiring passport match the information on the renewal
form.
In case you are unable to provide an Indian address then you should seek guidance from the Indian consulate on the
best way to proceed.
Kindly note that it will be a lot easier to apply for passport renewal before your current passport expires.
Be aware that for Indian passport renewals:
1.
Passport renewal application can be submitted if the current passport held has a validity of less than one year
2.
In case validity of the passport expired more than six months ago, then a letter stating for late renewal may be
required.
3.
In case passport has expired for more than a year, then in addition to a letter with explanation applicants may also
require approval from the Consulate General of India.
