Q.1221 Names on property utility bills if multiple owners . . .

Question: Dear Sir / Madam We have a property in Punjab India. It is registered in our names. There are four legal owners The question is it it important that the bills i.e. Water ,,municipal tax and electric bill should read all our names , or does it not matter if there is one persons name on the say the electricity bill Thanks Sent from my iPad Answer: As long as the bills are paid and there is an understanding amongst all owners the names may not matter. Normally if no one is challenging your ownership of the property, purchase documents should be enough to prove your ownership. However, where disputes of ownership related to ownership documents arise, then perhaps additional documents such as taxation and utility bills may come into play. Many buyers of property in India generally give more importance to getting a property sale deed registration to prove ownership of property and have a tendency to overlook the importance of getting their names on the official property tax record documents.
