Q.1259 No time to renew OCI for minor Can I travel to India with old
passport having OCI visa?
Question: Hi,
I am an OCI holder living in Bristol, UK. My daughter passport has been renewed recently. She has her OCI stamp on
old passport and also separate OCI booklet.
We are planning to travel to India in less than 7 weeks. We are ready to apply for OCI transfer but the appointments
available to drop applications are only after July 1st which would leave us no time to get our daughter's OCI done in
time.
Are we are allowed to travel to India with OCI on her old passport, OCI booklet and New Passport to India? Please let
us know if this is acceptable.
Thanks very much for your time in advance.
Regards,
Answer: Actually stamping of OCI on passports is no longer done. The OCI booklet is sufficient proof of OCI status
when traveling to India.
You mention that your daughter’s passport has been renewed but it looks like she now has a new passport. As per OCI
rules, renewal of OCI is required each time a new passport is issued up to the completion of 20 years of age.
Since I do not represent the authorities I cannot tell you whether you will be able to travel to India without renewal of
your daughter’s OCI. Although I have heard of some parents who found themselves in the same situation as you,
having traveled to India without any problems by just carrying their old passport, new passport and OCI booklet.
The authorities at entry point in India ask for passport and OCI booklet as they have been advised by the authorities
not to insist on production of foreign passport containing U visa sticker and grant immigration clearance to OCI
cardholders to enter/exit India on production of their OCI card [OCI Booklet] Click Here To view notification Click Here
If you need a definite answer then you need to contact the Indian consulate.
Keep in mind also the airline staff will check entry visa at time of departure. In case an agent of the airline you are
flying with is aware of the OCI renewal rule, then there is a possibility they may deny boarding.
