Q671. Renew expired Indian driving license in Bombay (Mumbai)

Question: Can you give me a reliable agent contact details for renewing my driving licence expired JULY 2013. This was issued from BOMBAY in 2007 when I was working in Bombay. Now I am working in SAUDI. I NEED THIS TO GET RENEWED Before I go on vacation in the month of JULY2014. Please guide me. Thanking you in advance. Best Regards, Thomas Mathew Answer: In the state of Maharashtra, where your original driving license was issued from, an expired driving license can be renewed as long as your driving license has not been expired for more than five years. As your license expired in 2013, you should have no problems renewing it. That said, you will have to visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Mumbai to get this done. There are no official agents who offer this type of service and advertise their services, perhaps because the services they offer may be deemed to be illegal! Although, if you go to the RTO office, you will probably find people who offer to expedite services for a fee. After your renewal application and applicable fee is submitted, the new driver license is mailed to your local address. This normally takes about two weeks. For license renewal you will need to submit the renewal application form, your expired driving license, form for declaration of physical fitness, a medical certificate and three copies of recent photographs. I believe, agents generally for a fee will get all the forms done, including the medical form and then submit the form on your behalf. The fee is around Rupees 200 for the new driving licenses with a computer chip. There is also a penalty charged @ Rupees 50 per year for late renewal. Agents will charge you the fee, plus money for their services. I would suggest you not tell them you are a NRI as this will result in a higher demand for money from agents. Keep in mind that the agent will only submit your documents, they normally cannot give you the new license, as per rules the license will be mailed to the local address shown on the driving license. A sample of the forms to be filled are shown here for convenience purpose, kindly be aware form format can be changed at any time by the authorities.
