Going abroad on student visas!
The United States of America, Canada and United Kingdom continue to be the most
preferred choice for Indian students planning to study overseas. Recently students have
started to seek student visas for Australia and New Zealand. Most Indian parents want
their children to have a sound education and are willing to spend money to help pay for
their children's education.
Studying abroad requires a lot of money unless you are lucky enough to qualify for a
scholarship. The time when students could work their way through college has believe
it or not disappeared for foreign students.
Some time back during my visit to India I was surprised at the vast number of
advertisements posted in the Indian news media making it sound quite easy and
tempting for students to go abroad for studies. I can remember that in the past, Indian students went overseas for higher education after
graduating with perhaps a masters degree in India in fields such as medicine, engineering or applied sciences.
These days, when one looks at some of these advertisements from consultants it would appear that you actually can go abroad to do
courses that probably only require minimum qualifications and ability to speak some English. Perhaps its become some sort of a status
symbol to get educational certificate from abroad. Perhaps for some just an excuse to go overseas.
Students are advised to be very vigilant and do their homework before being talked into going abroad on a student visa. Many courses
these ads talk about will not further your career either in India or abroad if you think you may be able to settle overseas. Unless you plan
to attend a reputable university abroad and get admission before leaving India, I would suggest you move ahead with caution. Many
schools and colleges overseas are private colleges. These colleges need money and while they are limited to charging certain amounts to
local residents, they can charge larger fees to overseas students. Many parents in countries like India will do anything to get their children
educated and a foreign qualification is quite tempting. However some of the degrees and diplomas you may end up getting may not be
worth the paper they are printed on.
Identifying Immigration Scams
While there are good professional immigration consultants who offer sound advice to their clients, there are some who are not so straight
forward and it is up to people seeking immigration advice to avoid immigration consultant scams.
A consultant who claims to have special connections to Foreign embassy officials that can get them special advantages is usually a lie.
Don't end up paying money to consultants who take this route to guarantee you a foreign immigrant visa. Some consultants lie about
application processing times and claim to get things done for you fast provided they are paid certain sums of money. The chances are that
you will end up wasting your money.
Consider this:
•
When dealing with agents to help you get an immigrant or a student visa, caution is advised.
•
Select courses that will actually benefit you and check the schools thoroughly before selecting one.
•
Just because a school has a fancy name or a foreign address does not mean its great.
Be an informed consumer, time spent investigating before laying down your money will help you not only save money but will help your
career by steering you to the school and course that is right for you. Don't be talked into applying for courses that are not of interest to you
and will do nothing for your career. Accepting courses that are presently available with the idea of changing your course of study later is a
long shot that is not easy to do for foreign students.
Some agents may guarantee admission in schools of their choice and a visa within a matter of days if you go by their selection. Their main
purpose may be just to persuade you to accept their service so they can collect their fees.
Finally, don't try for a student visa just for the sake of traveling to a foreign country. There are quite a few people who are adamant on
going abroad and when all other avenues of getting a visa fail, they turn to a student visa as a ticket out of India. What lies ahead may be
problems that will cost them dearly in money and perhaps problems with the law.
