Q253. Holding British and Indian passport at the same time
Question: Hello Mr VK Chand, My parents were born in Gujarat/Nadiad, I was born in Kenya in 1960, lived in Guju between the age of 3.5-10years then in London until 18 years of age, then in Oxford until now. Is it possible for me to have a Brit passport (which I have) and an Indian passport? Can my daughter (Brit, born in Oxford, now 16 years of age) have a NRI passport as well? Questions, questions, .. The high commission website in London is a mess and no human picks the phone up there .. I am hoping that you may help.. Many thanks, in advance. All the best, Ashwin.
Answer: While UK allows its citizens to hold dual citizenship and thereby hold a British Passport and also that of another country, India does not. You and your daughter can apply for OCI which is a lifelong visa for India. Registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is the only alternative if you wish to continue to keep your British passport.
