Q1235. Do NRI’s pay VAT in India

Question: Dear Sir Thank you for taking time to answer my querry regarding the following:

  • Do NRIS have to pay VAT?

  • Is there any website or book that i can get where i would have more information about rights of NRIS?

Answer: VAT replaces sales tax! There is no reason why NRIs would be exempt from paying it. There are some exemptions offered at times, for instance, the UP government exempts army personnel from paying VAT when buying cars or scooters.

There are many websites that provide information on NRI issues. NriInformation.com does have quite a bit of information as it is devoted exclusively to NRI issues. I am sure there are many others, Just do a search on the Internet.
