150. Dual taxation India and Canada
Q: My Bro is a Canadian Citizen. He & his Family (i.e. Wife & 2 Kids) have surrendered
there Indian Citizenship & he also has a Child born after he emigrated to Canada.
He says if he takes up Dual Citizenship, regardless of his Income in India he still will have
to pay taxes here.
Which means he ends paying taxes in 2 countries for his income in Canada. Does it Work
That way?
Does he have to renew his Dual Citizenship Yearly?
A. For his income in Canada your brother does not have to pay any taxes in
India. Dual taxation treaties exist between Canada and India. As for your
second question, India does not allow dual citizenship but offers the overseas
citizen of India (OCI) which is a lifelong visa and there is no requirement to
renew this yearly.
