203. Keeping public service job in India after acquiring foreign citizenship?
Q: Dear Mr. Chand,
Appreciate the lovely service provided by u to clear doubts about NRI issues.
I am an Indian Citizen working with PSU company at Mumbai and also inherits some agricultural land in Maharashtra
I am likely to get citizenship of an European Union Country, papers for which are under process.
I want to know,
1 Whether i should inform my PSU Company about my propose change of Citizenship?
2 What will be the effect on my job, if i obtain European citizenship and surrender my Indian citizenship
3 What will happen to agriculture land, I inherited, can i still hold it after surrendering Indian Citizenship
4 I propose to visit my new country of Citizenship by obtaining leave from my PSU company and obtain Indian visa there, than come back to
india, join the job back and surrender my indian passport at mumbai and process my OCI at Mumbai, Will it be OK ? or
Should I need to surrender my Indian passport in my new country and apply for OCI fro there?
Your help will be most appreciated
Regards
Apa Pawaskar
A. Public Sector jobs in India are usually always reserved for Indian citizens. Once an employee changes citizenship the
chances are they cannot continue to work in the same capacity. It may be a requirement of your work contract that a change
of citizenship notification be given to them immediately and sometimes even when you make an application for foreign
citizenship.
Any agricultural land you legally inherit will continue to be yours regardless of your citizenship.
In case you are not aware, even OCI holders cannot work for the government of India.
