267. How to get a new gas connection in India
Q: I am a foreigner holding a oci, living in Puducherry in my own house and I need a gas connection; how can I approach a
gas dealer without the ration card?
I don't want irregular solution. In advance thanking you for an advice to my request.
A. To get a new gas connection in India you should locate the nearest gas agency office that services your area. The easiest
way to do this may be to just check with one of your neighbors or the local telephone directory.
A application is required to be filled in for a new gas connection. A ration card in NOT mandatory to apply for a new gas
connection in India. Documents that will be required to be submitted would be, one proof of your address and a photo proof
of your identity. Since you have your own house you could use your electricity bill, land-line telephone bill or property tax
bill to show proof of residence. Your passport, OCI booklet or driving license should be acceptable proof of identity.
When applying for a new gas connection, no deposit upfront is required, some may ask for a bribe to speed up your
application and they normally just take your money for doing nothing. All new gas connection bookings are done free. If you
are denied booking, get in touch with the main customer service department of the company where you are applying. The
address/phone number of the Customer Service is displayed at all distributer showrooms.
Sometimes dealers will try and sell you a stove giving you the impression that it will speed up your application. You may be
better of telling them you would buy the stove from them when your application is approved. Once you are registered you
get a new gas connection booking number.
When your connection is approved, you will have to pay for the deposit of the first cylinder and also pay for a regulator and
the gas tube that runs from the cylinder to the stove. Hope this helps.
