285. Must agricultural land already owned be sold after acquiring foreign

citizenship?

Q: Thanks so much for your informative Q&A. Here is my question - Is it allowed for an OCI card holder to hold onto an inherited agricultural land/property (from his parents) for a long time? One of my friend mentioned that if the inheritance happens after the person loses his Indian citizenship (holds OCI card), he/she will be forced to dispose/sell the agricultural land within 3 years. Is this correct ? Thanks in advance, Joseph A. The information you have received is not correct. If you legally owned the agricultural land before acquiring foreign citizenship, then you can continue to hold it as long as you want. If, at some point of time you decide to sell the land, then there is a requirement that you can only sell to a Indian citizen who is resident in Indian.
