241. Is Pan Card Compulsory in India
Q. Hi there,
i have recently re-located, moved to Bharat from South Africa, Could you please tell me the process for registration of a
business here?
1. do i need the tax/pan number first?
2. how to get that?
3. what is the cost?
4. how to avoid paying commission for these services?

A. Pan card is not mandatory in India. You will need a PAN if you have taxable income in India. To file your taxes in India a
PAN is required.
Even if you don't anticipate any income in India it makes good sense to get a PAN card as it is a good form of identification.
For instance even to get a Sim Card for your cell (mobile) phone in India you need proper ID and PAN card is acceptable.

There is no commission charged if you fill and submit the PAN application yourself. Agents who help you get PAN cards
charge a nominal fee of about Rupees 150 only. Sometimes paying a small commission saves a lot of time and even money in
the long run.
