413. OCI family living in India can apply for Aadhaar Cards

Questions: Dear Sir I will highly appreciate if you could answer my queries: I am a foreign national (Swedish) settled in India with my family. All of us are OCIs. 1) Am I allowed to use my Indian driving licence that was issued to me before I became OCI ? 2) Am I allowed to use my PAN that was issued to me before I became OCI ? Do I need to inform the authorities about my current OCI status ? 3) My name is included in the ration card which says (NRK - Non Resident Keralite). Do I need to inform them about my current OCI status ? 4) Am I allowed to invest in infrastructure bonds for tax savings ? Are these bonds only allowed for Indian nationals ? 5) My second son is Swedish citizen by birth as both me and my wife were Swedish citizens (also OCIs) at that time. He does not have a document called 'Birth Certificate'. The only document that is given by the authorities is the 'Extract from population register' which states his date of birth along with parent's details. Is that valid in India? 6) My sons are 8 years old and 4 years old and we all have applied for our new passports (renewal). Do I have to apply for my sons new OCI booklets and also lifelong visa stamped in their passports? I read that it is required to get this everytime till they are 20 years old. 7) Are we eligible to apply for Aadhar cards ? (the new id introduced in India) Thanks Hari Answer: Regards to your questions: 1. As long as your Indian driver license is valid, you can use it. 2. You can use the same PAN, one PAN is for life. While OCI or Non OCI makes no difference in relation to PAN, It would be a good idea to notify the authorities about your current address if you are now based in India. This can be done on-line also. 3. Ration cards are for residents, citizenship, OCI status etc. do not matter. Might be a good idea to get the non-resident status on your ration card changed to resident, since you now live in India. *Please see answer to question 419 for update on ration cards for OCIs. 4. As for Tax Saving Infrastructure Bonds, NRI's are not eligible to participate in the Issue. Furthermore, my understanding is that as per the recent budget 2012, Infrastructure Bonds would not be eligible as Tax saving instrument under Section 80CCF from FY 2012-13. 5. Whether authorities in India will accept the 'Extract from population register' in lieu of a birth certificate, would depend on the authorities. 6. Regards to issue of fresh OCI visa for your children, you are correct. Every time their passport is renewed, they would be required to get fresh OCI documents until they are 20 years old. The purpose of this is, appearance changes as children grow older. Fresh documents are again required when applicants reach age 50. 7. Aadhaar cards are for all residents, every individual above 15 years of age, including NRIs, and foreigners residing in India. Your family can apply for Aadhaar cards.
